Commercial and Home Composting Services in London, Surrey, Berkshire and surrounding areas

Composting

Around two thirds of the rubbish you throw away could be composted by putting kitchen and garden waste into a compost bin or garden heap. You can produce a nutritious all-in-one plant food, soil conditioner and mulch for your:

  • garden
  • allotment
  • window box
  • Potted plants.

Composting saves waste from being put into landfill and cuts down the need to buy fertilisers and peat-based products.  This is good for the environment, as most commercial compost comes from peat bogs which support rare plants and animals, but it also saves you money when you make your own compost.

What you can compost

For the best compost use a 50/50 mixture of 'greens' and 'browns'.

Greens are young, wet, sappy materials like grass cuttings, flowers and vegetable peelings that rot quickly.

Browns are tougher, dry items like twigs and old hedge clippings, sawdust and cardboard.  Browns add structure to the compost allowing air in and providing the microbes with a balanced diet.

For the best results you should use a balanced mix of the following materials

Green:

  • Fruit and vegetable scraps
  • Tea bags and coffee grounds
  • Old flowers and bedding plants
  • Young hedge clippings, soft prunings and perennial weeds
  • Straw or hay from horses or other animals
  • Gerbil, hamster and rabbit bedding
  • Grass cuttings

Brown:

  • Autumn leaves
  • Sawdust and wood shavings
  • Tough hedge clippings
  • Woody prunings
  • Plain cardboard, such as tubes
  • Egg boxes
  • Paper towels
  • Old straw

However, you should never compost any of the following materials:

  • Cooked food.
  • Cooked vegetables
  • Raw or cooked fish and meat
  • Cat litter and dog faeces
  • Glossy magazines and newspaper
  • Coal and coke ash
  • Disposable nappies
  • Printed cardboard

Compost activators are useful to speed up the compost process if you have too much "browns".  You can add a small amount of pig, horse, cow, chicken or pigeon manure, young weeds, comfrey leaves and grass cuttings - although they should be spread around and not added in a large clump.

Adding too much of these accelerators will lead to a sloppy liquid, so use them in moderation.
